Charlie Brooker, Creator of ‘Black Mirror’, Aims to Disrupt the Content Industry

Have you ever felt like you’ve seen too much of Black Mirror’s technology-driven dystopias? Well, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. According to the show’s creator, Charlie Brooker, the new season shakes things up while staying true to the show’s roots. In this blog post, we’ll explore how Brooker is turning the show’s lens back on itself and shifting away from typical Black Mirror tropes.

Less Technology, More Weirdness
In previous seasons, Black Mirror episodes often centered around the dangers of technology. However, Brooker explains that this wasn’t the show’s original intention. Instead, it was always designed to be a “more paranoid and weird and hopefully unique show.” This is why the new season features episodes that barely touch on technology, while others take a spin on traditional Black Mirror topics.

Turning Life Into Content
One of the new episodes, “Joan is Awful,” explores the idea of turning one’s life into content. Brooker admits that this is a topic he often finds intriguing. As a writer, there’s always the question of how much of one’s life should be turned into content. Brooker explains that it’s something that everyone is potentially wrestling with. In a world where everyone has a platform to share their lives online, there’s a need to be seen and recognized. Interestingly, even Brooker himself is grappling with how much to share, confessing that his son asked to start a YouTube channel at just 9 years old.

The Annoyance of AI
As an showrunner, Brooker has always been fascinated with the idea of artificial intelligence. In the past, several Black Mirror episodes have tackled the topic. However, Brooker didn’t quite capture the full story with an AI stand-up comedian for the new season. He’s worried that it might come across as reactive rather than pre-emptive. Brooker’s main gripe with AI is that it often results in something that is watered-down compared to its original version.

So, if you’ve been hesitant to watch Black Mirror’s latest season due to the fear of repetitive themes, fear not. This season is fresh, weird, and packed full with unique stories that will leave you questioning your own existence.
